The words of this title were spoken by Jesus in a prayer to His heavenly Father (John 17:17). Jesus teaches us with these words that truth is determined by the word of God. There is no such thing as my truth and your truth. There is only God’s truth as it is revealed by God’s word.
God has given us His word in the Bible (2 Timothy 3:16). The revelation of God’s word is complete (1 Corinthians 13:8-10; James 1:25; Jude 3) and furnishes us completely (2 Timothy 3:17; 2 Peter 1:2-4). Without it we cannot know the truth. Therefore, we must make every effort to learn what the Bible teaches (2 Timothy 2:15). We must love the truth, seek the truth and abide in the truth (John 8:31-32). If we do not, we will be deceived by falsehood, never find the truth nor experience life in the truth (2 Thessalonians 2:9-11).
There are many different claims on truth made by many people of many different faiths but only God’s word is truth (Romans 10:17). The Bible teaches that there is only one faith (the New Covenant of Christ), just as there is one body (the church of Christ), one Spirit (the Holy Spirit), one hope (in heaven), one Lord (Jesus Christ), one baptism (immersion in water for the remission of sins), one God and Father of all (Ephesians 4:4-6).
We cannot justify our differences with such ideas as you have your interpretation and I have mine. But rather must honestly examine our claims against the Bible (Acts 17:11). When we see the truth, we must be willing to receive it as the word of God no matter the consequences (1 Thessalonians 2:13-14; James 1:21).
Jesus told Pilate that He had come to bear witness to the truth, when Pilate asked Him, “What is truth?” (John 18:36-38). Unfortunately, he didn’t wait for an answer but seemed frustrated as though he had given up on finding it. Yet, the very One who could answer His question stood right in front of Him. How sad that so many will quit searching for truth and reject the only One who can show it to them (John 14:6).
