That question may sound quite negative to you. It may sound more like a burden than a blessing. But God made it clear to Israel that His requirements were essential to their relationship with Him. God requires no less of His people today. To experience redemption from the life of sin and death, to know God, and to have an abundant, eternal life with Him, we, too, must meet His requirements. Fear the LORD your God. The Hebrew for LORD is “Yahweh”. It is the name of God, literally “I am” (Exodus 3:13-14). He was not created but He is the Creator, the One who is, who always has been and always will be. He is your God, our God. We have a close, intimate relationship with Him because we have covenanted together with Him in Christ (Galatians 3:26-29). He alone is worthy of our utmost reverence (Hebrews 12:28-29; Matthew 10:28).
Walk in all His ways. This means to be constantly in fellowship with God, following His advice, His guidance, and moving in His power and strength, fulfilling His goals, purposes, ends, and aims (Proverbs 3:5-7). Love Him. He is a real and personal God. He is not just some grand idea or mysterious force but the One so dear to our hearts (Matthew 22:37-38). We show our love to Him when we obey His commandments (John 14:15) not a burden (1 John 5:3). Serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul. This is how we demonstrate our love; not with a half-hearted effort but with our whole being we serve Him (Mat. 20:28). Keep the commandments of the LORD and His statutes which I command you today for your good. We obey Him because we trust Him (Rom. 1:5; 16:26; Gal. 5:6; Jam. 2:14-26). His orders are not arbitrary. They are not meant to inhibit our fulfillment in life (Ecclesiastes 12:13). They are not burdensome (1 John 5:3). God is not trying to be mean or to hurt us but is always concerned for our well-being (Deu. 6:24-25; 1 Pet. 5:7). This is how we experience the many blessings of God’s grace: Fear Him, walk with Him, love Him, serve Him, keep His commandments, and enjoy the blessings of God in your life now and forever!
