John 8:31-32 “Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, ‘If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.’”
True disciples of Jesus abide in His word. They are not followers of men. They do not live by the creeds, traditions, doctrines or philosophies of men. They stay with Jesus’ word.
True disciples of Jesus know the truth. The truth is not subjective but objective (a reality outside us). It is not relative to circumstance and experience, but absolute (unchangeable). It is not your truth or my truth but the truth. The truth is not determined by man, but God and it has been firmly and irrevocably set by God. It is eternal. The truth is knowable (understandable). To say that you cannot know the truth impugns the power and character of God. It is to say that He cannot communicate so we can understand, or it is to say that He chose not to as a cruel, malicious joke.
True disciples of Jesus are free. They are free from sin to live for God. They are not free to live as they please. Many say, “Live it up and be yourself, you only go around once in life.” Others complain about what they can’t do or being inhibited from fulfilling their evil desires. Satan lies and promises freedom to do what you want but he only wants to make you his slave. He seeks to rule over you through the lusts of your flesh with drugs, alcohol, sexual addiction, materialism, worldliness and selfishness but the pleasure never lasts. It only leads to misery, heartache, broken relationships, loss of job, emptiness, sorrow, jealousy, hatred, harm and destruction.
Are you a true disciple of Jesus?
