Most all of us have insurance of one kind or another, such as home, health or life insurance. We see the need to protect ourselves from losing our home, are concerned about not being able to pay for health care and being able to leave something for those left behind when we die. These are certainly important concerns for us all to consider but have you thought about insurance for your soul? What is going to happen to your soul when you die? Will you spend eternity in heaven or in hell? Can you know whether you are saved or not? No insurance company can give you this kind of insurance but God provides it for you. It is found in Jesus Christ. Paul had reminded the Christians in Rome how they had been baptized into Christ and raised with Him to walk in newness of life (Romans 6). Then, he writes, “There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit” (Romans 8:1). In Christ, we are covered! That’s comprehensive insurance; continual, complete and full coverage.
John gives us the fine print on preserving this comprehensive insurance coverage provided by God in Christ. "If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:6-9). Trusting Christ’s blood to cleanse us from all sin, we must make a sincere effort to be sinless and at the same time be honest about our sins before God. Finally, John puts God’s soul insurance guarantee in writing, “These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God” (1 John 5:13).
