Not Just Any Church
When I speak of “the church”, I’m usually talking about all of God’s people that have been saved through Jesus Christ. Sometimes, I use the phrase when referring to a local congregation or to an assembled group of God’s people. The New Testament speaks of “the church”, in each of these ways (e.g. 1 Corinthians 1:2; 10:32; 11:18; 14:19, 28, 35).
I may at times use the phrase, “the church”, when speaking of a church building, though I know the church you read about in the Bible is not the building but the people. Similarly, I may refer to a school house as “the school”, though I know that the school is the people not the building.
What concerns me is that not every church is “the church”, the church you read about in the New Testament.
So, not just any and every church is “the church”. I don’t want membership in just any church but in “the church”. What about you?
