My beliefs are important. I believe that God exists, that He is the Creator of all things and that He loves every soul. I believe that the Bible is the word of God, that it reveals God’s will for our lives and that the gospel is God’s power to salvation. I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, that He died for my sins and was raised from the dead, that He is the only Lord and Savior of the world. I believe that He will judge the world at the last day, sending some to eternal torment and others to eternal life. My attitude also matters. Whether I am loving or hateful, whether I am compassionate or don’t care, whether I keep my temper or lose it, whether I am humble or proud, whether I am respectful or inconsiderate, whether I am forgiving or bitter, whether I am unselfish or selfish, whether I am content or covetous, whether I am sincere or hypocritical is a choice that I make each day in my heart.
My attitude will determine my life. If my attitude is wrong, it will blind me to the truth but if my attitude is right, I will see the truth. If my attitude is wrong, it will hinder my obedience and render it profitless but if my attitude is right, it will expedite my obedience and render it fruitful. If my attitude is wrong, it will hurt my influence for Christ but if my attitude is right, it will help my influence for Christ. If my attitude is wrong, it will cause me to lose my soul but if my attitude is right, it will cause me to save my soul. Others may not really know my heart. It may deceive, even me. But God knows my heart. He knows yours, too. Your beliefs and your attitude are just as important as mine. God help us to constantly pray as the psalmist: “Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me, and know my anxieties; And see if there is any wicked way in me, And lead me in the way everlasting” (Psalms 139:23-24). God help us to carefully heed the advice of the wise one: “Keep your heart with all diligence, For out of it spring the issues of life” (Proverbs 4:23). God help us to never forget the warning from the prophet: “The heart is deceitful above all things, And desperately wicked; Who can know it? I, the LORD, search the heart, I test the mind, Even to give every man according to his ways, According to the fruit of his doings” (Jeremiah 17:9-10).
