Marriage Was God’s Idea

​From the beginning God saw that it was not good for man to be alone and made a helper comparable to him (Genesis 2:18). He brought the woman to the man and said, “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh” (Genesis 2:21-24). This was God’s idea of marriage.
 
There are those who have other ideas about marriage. Some refuse marriage, while others forbid marriage. Some want sexual relations without marriage. Some want sexual relations outside of their marriage. Some want a polygamous marriage. Some want a same sex marriage. Some want a divorce from their marriage partner. Some want to marry another.

​Jesus, the Christ, spoke about marriage, divorce and remarriage (Matthew 5:31-32; 19:1-9; Mark 10:1-2; Luke 16:18). He upheld God’s idea of marriage not man’s ideas. He taught that divorce was not an option, except for sexual immorality. He further taught that to marry another would cause one to commit adultery.
 
Paul, an apostle of Christ, also taught about these things (1 Corinthians 7). He taught that the married must not leave nor divorce one another and if they do to remain unmarried or to be reconciled (vv. 10-11). He also taught that if an unbelieving spouse is not willing to live with a believing spouse that the believing spouse is not held responsible when the unbelieving spouse departs the marriage (vv. 12-16). He further taught that a woman is bound by law as long as her husband lives (vv. 39-40) and that if she marries another while he is alive, she shall be called an adulteress (Romans 7:2-3).
 
The God-inspired book of Hebrews reads, “Marriage is honorable among all, and the bed undefiled; but fornicators and adulterers God will judge” (Hebrews 13:4).
 
We must uphold God’s idea for marriage from the beginning and not substitute our ideas for God’s idea of marriage.
