I recently met Jeff at a Gospel Meeting. Because he committed adultery, his wife divorced him. He went into a great depression and started drinking. In time, he found himself in a dump of a hotel room with nothing left to his name but four beers in the refrigerator. That was all he wanted because it was the only thing that helped him forget everything.
Jeff explained to me that he had to go so low before he would return to the Lord. There are still many hurtful consequences from his sins that he must live with every day, but he is now sober and spiritually restored. I encouraged Jeff to let God use him to help others who find themselves in similar situations.
He shared his story with me and I am sharing it with you, because Jeff is a living demonstration of the truth that was being preached. We will never regret listening to the Lord but will always regret it if we don’t listen to the Lord. Jesus Christ said, “I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly” (John 10:10). Again, He said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me” (14:6). A blessed and an eternal life is only found in following Jesus Christ.
The Proverbs give us this wise advice: “Trust in the LORD with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths. Do not be wise in your own eyes; Fear the LORD and depart from evil” (Proverbs 3:5-7).
Like Jeff, most of us have to learn the hard way but we can be wiser and do better in the long run if we will turn to the Lord. Then, God can use each one of us to help one another and all others towards heaven!
