Depression is a real and present danger, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic. There are those who are shut in, others who have gotten sick and lost loved ones, some who have lost their jobs and businesses, so many changes that have brought an unusual amount of stress upon us all.
Recently, I have talked to several preachers that are battling depression. Elijah, the prophet, had a tremendous battle with depression that lasted many days (1 Kings 19). James reminds us that “Elijah was a man with a nature like ours” (James 5:17). Perhaps, we forget that we are all just human.
More than one person has pointed out how that God helped Elijah overcome his depression. Here are some pointers we can learn from his story in 1 Kings 19 that may help you, too.
1. Do what God says to strengthen yourself, both physically and spiritually (vv. 5-8).
2. Talk it out with God to get a new vision on things (vv. 9-14).
3. Get busy doing God’s work to become involved with others (vv. 15-21).
There are some practical things that you can do to help yourself stave off depression and help you get through depression. Here are some more passages that may encourage, guide, and help you today: Isaiah 41:10; 2 Corinthians 4:16-5:1; Hebrews 12; James 1:2-8.
God be with you to bless you always! I know He can and will!
