Is Hurricane Irma another of many signs heralding Christ’s coming at the end of the world? Not if you believe what Jesus said about His coming.
Jesus said that nobody but the Father knows when He is coming (Matthew 24:36). If there will be signs of His coming anyone could know. Doesn’t that mean that if someone says there are signs that Christ is about to come that he doesn’t know what he is talking about?
Jesus said that it will be like the days of Noah when all was normal until suddenly they were taken away by the flood (vv. 37-39). God gave no signs to let Noah’s generation know when the flood was coming. Doesn’t that mean that we should not expect any signs of Christ’s coming?
Jesus said that it will be like an army that comes through taking some and leaving others (vv. 40-42; cf. 1 Samuel 11:11). Armies don’t give signs to indicate when they are going to attack. Doesn’t that mean that there will be no signs to indicate Christ’s coming?
Jesus said that He would come unexpectedly like a thief in the night (vv. 43-44). Thieves don’t give signs to let you know when they are coming. Doesn’t that mean that there will be no signs of Christ’s coming?
Jesus said that His coming will be like a master who completely surprises his evil servant who thought his master was delaying coming (vv. 45-51). If there were any signs of the master’s coming the servant would not have been caught off guard. Doesn’t that mean that there will not be any signs of Christ’s coming?
Instead of looking for signs, “be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect” (v. 44).
